Well, let me say that I have been working as an occupational health and safety advisor, as a safety consultant, for 23 years. I am involved in ensuring the safety and health of my colleagues. You would think that this would be a rewarding profession, that employers would be happy, and that they would also recognize the added value, but experience teaches us that this is not always the case. Employees are mainly focused on their own work, on achieving the employer’s goals, which often align with their own. They are often committed and very passionate employees. Additionally, they are also willing to go beyond their own limits. During a seminar organized by the employers’ association, where I was asked to conduct a workshop, the organizer said that we were the silent warriors, the people who are concerned with the safety and health of others, but who are not always appreciated for it.
No, I don’t always enjoy my work either. The funny thing is that ‘enjoyable’ is my main motivation. Enjoyment is, for me, more important than a good salary. Of course, there needs to be bread on the table, so salary is certainly not unimportant, but if I no longer enjoy it, I will look for something else. I often say, I don’t find my work unpleasant. I have been doing it for 23 years for a reason, but it’s not my hobby.
It’s something about “Finding your Ikigai”
